Cleaning habits for the New Year

If you’ve decided that one of your goals this year is to have a cleaner and more organised home – here are a few tips to get you started.

Tip 1 – Create a cleaning schedule

Break the cleaning jobs into daily tasks or ‘habits’. For example, do your kitchen deep clean on a Sunday evening and a bathroom deep clean mid-week. If you break the tasks up and schedule them they become much more manageable and far less overwhelming.

Tip 2 – Enjoy the task

Set yourself a timer to get a task done and use the time to listen to your favourite music or podcast while cleaning or organising. If you know your favourite podcast episode is half an hour long, then set that time to get as much as you can done. It’ll make the task go a lot faster and if you save your favourite episodes for when you clean, it might even make it something to look forward to.

Tip 3 – Clean as you go

If you find that each weekly task is overwhelming – help yourself by doing the smaller wiping down surfaces, keeping up to date with the washing up or laundry and putting stuff away after you’ve used it. This way you’ll keep your space more organised at all times and the big task days won’t seem as overwhelming.

Tip 4 – Stay on Top of the washing pile

That washing basket piles up more quickly then we want to but it’s one of those things we need to keep on top of or it really does become an overwhelming job. Once your laundry has been washed and is dry, don’t leave it folded up on a side somewhere. Spend an extra 10 minutes putting everything away in its correct home and your future self will thank you!

Tip 5 – Make Your Bed in the mornings

Such a simple one but so effective! It’s a small habit that has a massive impact and also helps to avoid the urge to crawl back into bed!
