This is known as carpet shading and while it can look concerning, it’s completely natural.
What Is Carpet Shading?
Carpet shading is an optical effect caused by changes in the direction of the carpet pile. It happens when the fibres of the carpet lean in different directions, which alters how light reflects off the surface.
When viewed from one angle, the carpet may appear lighter but from another angle, the same area may look darker.
You may also hear shading referred to as:
- Pile reversal
- Pooling
- Watermarking
All of these terms describe the same natural effect.
Why Does It Happen?
Carpet pile has a natural direction in which it lays. When all fibres lean the same way, the carpet appears uniform in colour. Over time, some fibres may start to lean in a different direction. When this happens, light reflects differently across the surface creating the appearance of lighter or darker patches.
Shading most commonly:
- Develops gradually over time
- Appears in high traffic areas
- Forms in front of frequently used furniture
- Can occur in low-traffic areas or even under furniture
- Can sometimes be present in brand-new carpets
It is most noticeable on:
- Dense, deep cut pile carpets
- Solid coloured carpets
Patterned carpets tend to disguise shading more effectively
Can Cleaning Cause Shading?
This is a question we are often asked.
Shading is not caused by carpet cleaning. However, it can sometimes appear more noticeable after cleaning.
Before cleaning, uniform soiling, furniture placement or lighting may mask the effect. Once the carpet is professionally cleaned and restored, the natural pile variations may become more visible.
This can understandably lead to the impression that cleaning has caused the issue but shading is not a result of the cleaning process.
Is Carpet Shading a Fault?
Put simply – No!
Shading:
- Does not affect the durability of your carpet
- Is not a manufacturing defect
- Is not a fitting fault
- Cannot be predicted or fully prevented
It is simply a characteristic of certain carpet types.
Can It Be Fixed?
Unfortunately, shading cannot be permanently corrected. However, regular maintenance can help reduce its appearance. Lightly brushing the pile in one consistent direction as part of your weekly vacuuming routine may improve the overall look.
