Tips for a warmer home

Tips for a Warmer & Cosier home

Now it’s starting to get colder especially in the mornings and evenings, there’s a few simple things you can do to make your house warmer & save energy in the process.

Rugs

Large rugs are great for this as the more a rug insulates the floor surface, the warmer it’ll keep the room.  If you don’t want to go for a large rug, smaller rugs can work too especially in sitting areas, like near the couch and even more so if you have a wooden or hard floor.

Thicker curtains

One of the easiest ways to protect your home from losing heat in the colder months is to get thicker curtains. Curtains with a thermal lining are an even better choice as they add another layer of protection from the cold.

Windows

It’s no doubt the thicker your window the more cold it will keep out, however there are other things you can do. If you can’t upgrade your windows – self adhesive foam strips can help to seal any gaps in the windows which may be letting the cold through. There’s also the option to get plastic or metal strips. These are a bit more costly but will last longer.

Natural Light

Let as much natural light in as possible during the day then trap the warmth at night by closing your curtains.

Simply put – get the heat in while you can and trap it when it in when the sun has gone.

Lock up your windows and doors

Buy locking up your windows and door your preventing any drafts coming through and keeping your house as cosy as possible. Make sure the strip is the right size to fill the gap in your window. If the strip is too big it will get crushed and you may not be able to close the window. If it’s too small there will still be a gap and the cold will sneak in.

Get draft stoppers

These sit at the base of door and windows to create a barrier between drafts and the inside of your home. They are not a long-term solution but are a great way of stopping the cold getting in (you can also get some really cute ones!)

Close unused rooms

Making sure any rooms which aren’t regularly used are closed will prevent any cold air from moving around and into the rest of the house. It’ll then keep the heat you have generated in a smaller area that you can stay toasty in!
